Steve Douglas appointed Chair of Commonweal Housing

Steve Douglas CBE has been appointed Chair of Commonweal Housing following outgoing Chair Fiona Mactaggart’s decision to step down from the role after 13 years.

Existing Commonweal Trustee, Steve Douglas has been selected by the Board to take the role, with Fiona’s nephew Jack Mactaggart who is an existing Trustee of the charity becoming Vice Chair.

Under Fiona’s stewardship, the charity has focused its efforts on uncovering social injustice and seeking to find an appropriate housing solution wherever possible. Now, with a wealth of learning across multiple injustices in tow, Commonweal plans to continue this element of its work whilst increasing the reach and impact of existing project outcomes.

Steve, who this year was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to housing, is currently Group Chief Executive of housing consultancy Altair and Chair of One Housing Group. Steve has also been a Trustee of Commonweal Housing for seven years, helping the charity to grow and develop.

Steve said: “Having been a Trustee of Commonweal Housing for a number of years, I am excited to be assisting the charity to move into its next phase.

“I can’t help but feel that Commonweal Housing’s approach is more relevant than ever. In a climate of uncertainty, housing shortage, affordability and rising homelessness the charity’s desire to challenge the status quo, test new ideas and share learning so others can benefit is a bold rarity.”

Fiona will be continuing in her role as a Trustee of Commonweal Housing, whilst also maintaining her position as Chair for both the Fawcett Society and Agenda, the alliance for women and girls at risk.
